Sometimes. Wet nursing has a long and storied history—and was once one of the most lucrative ways for a woman to make a living. Twentieth century medical research, however, revealed that breast milk could transfer disease from wet nurse to baby. Combine that with the invention of baby formula—and an effective breast pump—and wet nursing soon become obsolete.
