1 Million Pounds of Ground Beef Recalled

Valley Meat Company in Modesto, California recalled frozen ground beef products due to a potentially deadly E. coli contamination.

Valley Meat Company of Modesto, Calif., recalled nearly one million pounds of frozen ground beef patties and bulk ground beef products due to a potential E. coli O157:H7 contamination. The strain can be deadly and may cause diarrhea, dehydration and kidney failure. Here's the lowdown on what you need to know about this recall:

Where: Six of the confirmed cases of beef-related E. coli food poisoning occurred in California between early April and June 18, 2010. A seventh confirmed case occurred in February. Affected products were distributed to retailers and food service providers in California, Texas, Oregon, Arizona and internationally.

What to look for: All of the potentially contaminated beef was produced between Oct. 2, 2009 and Jan. 12, 2010 and is marked with an establishment number of "EST. 8268" within the USDA inspection mark. The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has the full list of products subject to the recall. According to the Valley Meat Company, the affected 2009 products carry a production number between 275 and 365 before the "09" ending. The affected 2010 products carry a production number between 001 and 012 before the "10" ending.

What to do: Much of the recalled beef has probably been consumed, but the FSIS is concerned that some retailers and consumers may still have the products in their freezers. Check any frozen beef products you may have on hand and discard any beef subject to the recall. (If you experience any symptoms of contamination, contact your doctor.)
