10 Things We Learned from Lauren Hutton

The style icon dresses herself for a J.Crew shoot and offers up some words of wisdom

We love Lauren Hutton for many reasons. For one, in 2005, she reminded us to be proud of our bodies when she posed nude for Big magazine at the age of 61. "I want [women] not to be ashamed of who they are when they're in bed," she told Good Morning America. You go, girl!

Recently, J.Crew gave the model/actress a rack of clothes to style her own looks for a photo shoot. She did just that and spewed some inspirational quotes yet again. "She's classic, strong and beautiful. She knows what's she wants and knows what works for her," says Marissa Webb, vice president of women's design for J.Crew. "And, she knows how to mix it up and add a little quirk that we all so love."

The pictures and lessons are in! Here, we reveal the 10 things we learned about style from the inspirational fashion icon...

Lesson 1: Make it look effortless.
"You never want to look like you've spent too much time getting dressed."

Lesson 2: It doesn't have to be perfect.
"It's better to look as if you've just thrown something on rather than prissed everything up. I like when things are slightly off-kilter, asymmetrical and a little messed up."

Lesson 3: Opposites attract.
"I like mixing expensive with inexpensive. And I like easy things that don't normally go together, like a simple men's thermal with sequined track pants. Put them together in a smart way and it feels very fresh."

Lesson 4: Know yourself.
"Get to know your proportions. One of the secrets to figuring out your proportions is to really listen when people pay you a compliment, especially if you're getting the same compliments over and over. If someone says something looks good on you, look in the mirror and take note. There's a reason."

Lesson 5: Be comfortable.
"It's massively important for me to feel comfortable in what I'm wearing. It just makes me feel better, then my face looks better. When you show the world your best face and your best self, you quite often get that back."

Lesson 6: Don't be afraid to try new things.
"Developing your very best personal style -- and that includes figuring out what works for your body type -- involves a lot of trial and error. Youth is for trying absolutely everything. Usually by 50, you have some idea of what works for you because you've had some practice, but on the other hand, that doesn't mean you should stop trying new things. I almost never wear tights, but it's worth giving it another go."

Lesson 7: Have an open mind.
"I shop every department. I cruise the women's, men's and kids' departments. The kids section always has the funny, whimsical things that make me laugh..."

Lesson 8: It doesn't matter where you shop.
"I want to wear whatever looks good on me, no matter where it comes from."

Lesson 9: Take chances.
"Don't shy away from color, be sure to learn what works best with your skin tone. I love combining unusual colors. I like these orange and blue hues together because they are more or less the same intensity -- one hue is not stridently stronger or too much paler."

Lesson 10: Make the most out of what works for you.
"Fashion is what you're offered four times a year. Style is what you pick out of that fashion... It's what you make of it once you've learned what to accept and ignore based on what best suits you."
