Yes, we know things are different in France, but Vogue Paris surpassed some shocking fashion milestones by featuring a 10-year-old female model, Thylane Blondeau. Wearing smokey-eyed makeup and four-inch heels, Thylane's Lolita-like fashion spread has caused an uproar on this side of the pond.
The topic has exploded on iVillage’s Facebook page where we currently have 82 comments and counting. Most of our comments are from moms who fear this is just another example of the oversexualization of young children.
"I happen to have a 10 yr old grandchild. She is gorgeous and has been asked by many to model. No way we would we ever let her look like this. Children are pushed into sexy situations way way too young. That's why the teenage pregnancy rate in the country is so high." -- Nancy
"Quit exploiting children! She's only 10 years old...put her in a Gap ad!" -- Stephanie
"Atrocious!" -- Bianca
Others thought found the photos were beautiful and artisitic -- and nothing to get too worked up about.
"Modeling is modeling, she doesn’t look like a slut people. She looks very beautiful." -- Caitlin
"Shocking? Shockingly beautiful..." -- Jen
"Who ever thinks this is gross... you make me lol! Her pictures are flawless. The younger the better in modeling and for her to already be on or around Vogue is amazing." -- Ashlii
“Honestly, every little girl is being over-dressed.” -- Inku
An article on Jezebel argued that the photos were meant to be disturbing, to draw attention to the fact that many fashion models start their career as near-children. And one could say that this really isn't all that different from any average night on Toddlers & Tiaras. Still, it's hard to know whether this is a healthy start for a girl so young.
