When the ground is one big ice slick -- a slip and fall just waiting to happen -- you can’t be expected to head to the gym, let alone the ice rink or the ski slopes. But you can still get in a good workout -- and you should.
Exercise is super important during pregnancy because it strengthens your body for labor. In fact, a study in the Journal of Pediatrics shows that regular exercisers shave two hours off their active labor and have fewer birth complications.
Luckily, you can easily work up a sweat with at-home workouts geared for expectant moms. The Wii Fit will have you playing tennis, dancing, stepping, strength-training and doing yoga (just avoid exercising on your back after the first trimester). You can also download audio and video workouts to your iPod. Try The Perfect Pregnancy Workout, Pilates During Pregnancy with Niece Pecenka, or Prenatal Yoga #1. You can also try dozens of pre-natal fitness DVDs including Summer Sanders' Prenatal Workout; 10 Minute Solution: Prenatal Pilates; The Perfect Pregnancy Workout vol. 1; and Prenatal Yoga with Shiva Rea. Talk to your health-care provider before starting any exercise regimen.
