Staying fit and healthy yourself sets a great example for the entire family and encourages everyone to get involved. Nicole Piedra Costa, wife and mother of three children ages 5, 2 and 4 months in Coral Gables, Florida, found a gym that has a kids club, so her kids can participate in activities while she gets her workout in; and she joined Strollercize®, which allows her to workout with other Moms with her two little ones in tow. On days Costa can’t make it to either, and while her five-year-old is in school, Costa straps her baby and toddler in the double stroller and goes for a jog. “You have to give yourself many options if you are busy, so even if one falls through you still have no excuse not to exercise in some other form. I feel so proud every time I complete a workout, more now than ever because I know the hurdles I had to overcome just to do it!” she says.
Kids can get involved in the family's healthy eating habits too, says Brandi Koskie, a full-time working mom in Wichita, Kansas. Koskie brings her two-year-old daughter with her to the grocery store, where she gets to pick out the fresh produce for the week and she keeps a step stool in the kitchen so she can be part of the cooking process. "We make whole grain blueberry pancakes together most Saturday mornings," Koskie says. "She cracks the eggs, stires the batter, and drops the berries in."
Make It Work For You: Instead of using the kids (or your husband or friends) as an excuse not to work out or eat healthy foods, find ways that your 'team' can be a part of your healthy lifestyle. Take a power walk together, go for a family bike ride or prepare a healthy dinner together. We promise it will help you stick with your plan. No kids? Talk a walk after dinner, take a cooking class or try standup paddle boarding or rollerblading with friends or family on weekends.
