12 Perennials That Thrive in Shade

I have a small garden that receives filtered light but no full sun. Can you recommend some perennials for this spot?

There are a few perennials that thrive in partial shade -- all are rated to USDA Zones 4 to 8. Most of these plants prefer a rich, moist but well-drained soil, so be sure to add lots of organic matter such as compost before planting.

Astilbe, columbine, coral bells, dicentra, foxglove, goatsbeard, hosta, Japanese painted fern, Lobelia, Monarda (bee balm), Nepeta and Pulmonaria.
