13 easy and fun ways to keep dad (and you) happy and healthy

Too tired to exercise?

Working out makes you feel good.

Begin to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. Improving your cardiovascular fitness through regular aerobic exercise increases your body's supply of oxygen and reduces your risk of heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure, while increasing your energy level. It only takes three good workouts a week, around 20 to 30 minutes in length. Figure out easy ways to sneak some physical activity back into your daily routine. Try taking a fitness break at lunch. Use the steps rather than the elevator. Vary your routine. Walk or ride your bike to work. Hide the remote control. Make fitness fun. Play tennis or run with a friend. Listen to a book on tape or some music. Research has shown that men who participated in aerobic exercise for an hour three times a week, enjoyed a more active sex life than their sedentary peers. It is thought that exercise enhances a male's sex drive by affecting the circulating levels of testosterone. There's an added bonus!

Low on H2O

> You probably aren't drinking enough.

Sip water throughout the day, drinking at least eight tall glasses of water. Your body needs water to properly function. Too little water can cause fatigue. You may find yourself eating more when you are thirsty. A good water intake can also help to prevent formation of kidney stones, a condition that is more common among men. Drink up!

Striking a balance

How can you fit it all in?

With work, family, friends, recreation and other responsibilities you can quickly become overwhelmed. Lives today are complex and trying to juggle it all can be difficult. A major stressor is the inability to find time in your life to do the things that are important to you -- what you really want to do. Focus on what you want in your life. What do you need to do to get to this place, and what obstacles stand in your way? Keep your vision clearly in mind as you work toward your goal.

Got the munchies?

Healthy snacking is good for you.

Eating small meals throughout the day will help to keep your blood sugar and energy level from taking a dip. Nibble on fresh fruits and veggies. Crunchy foods are great stress relievers. Munch on carrots, celery, apple slices, popcorn. Regular snacks can help you to boost your metabolism, and encourage your body to efficiently burn fat. Good snacking leads to good health and high energy.

Smoke gets in your eyes

Smoking cigarettes is one of the top risk factors for illness and premature death. Do you want to quit?

Make a list, writing down every reason you can think of that you want to be free of cigarettes forever. To quit smoking, develop an action plan. Set a date to see yourself free of this addiction. Get rid of all cigarettes in your house. When the craving comes, take a deep breath, relax, close your eyes for a few seconds and see yourself as a non-smoker! Then read over your list of reasons that you never want to smoke again. Not acting immediately on the craving can help break the addictive cycle.
