The Risk: Feeling Invincible

STDs, texting while driving, sexting, “study” drug parties, candy-like chewing tobacco: Teen health risks keep rising, but mention that to your son or daughter and you’ll be lucky to get a shrug. “Despite the education provided by parents, teachers and newscasters, teens have a very egocentric mindset,” says Alec L. Miller, Psy.D., chief of child and adolescent psychology at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, N.Y. “They don’t truly believe these statistics apply to them.”
