There's an "anything can happen" vibe to the MTV Video Music Awards, and it's resulted in some truly jaw-dropping moments over the years. Sadly, nothing at the 2013 VMAs held a candle to Madonna smooching Britney Spears, or Beyonce debuting her baby bump. Still, there were enough fun moments to keep us watching. Here, the biggest surprises of this year's VMAs, ranked from biggest ('N Sync!) but not necessarily best (Miley Cyrus) to worst (Kanye West).
'N Sync performed with Justin Timberlake.
Okay, we totally knew this was going to happen, but it still gave us a jolt to see the boy band reunited. And "Bye Bye Bye" is -- surprise! -- still a great song.
Lady Gaga changed costumes five times during the opening number.
Even more impressive: She spent the rest of the night wearing nothing but a thong and a seashell bra.
Miley Cyrus lost her damn mind.
There were teddy bears and Robin Thicke and a lot of butt-grabbing and tongue-wiggling, and we'll be working through it with our therapist all week. But we couldn't take our eyes off it.
Katy Perry performed from a giant boxing ring under the Brooklyn Bridge.
It definitely looked cool, but Katy had trouble competing with the spectacular backdrop. Sad to say, "Roar" is just not her best song.
Austin Mahone won the "Artist to Watch" award.
And now we know who he is!
Taylor Swift spent the entire ceremony trashing Harry Styles.
First she visibly mouthed "shut the f**k up" while One Direction was presenting. Then she mockingly thanked "the person who inspired this song" when she received a Moonman for "I Knew You Were Trouble." Remember, they dated for three months and broke up seven months ago. Time to move on, Taylor.
Kanye West performed "Blood on the Leaves" entirely in shadow.
It was edgy, in a really boring way. You know what would have been more shocking? If he'd performed in front of a slideshow of baby North photos.
Jennifer Hudson joined in the end of Macklemore's "Same Love."
Kind of random, right? Wouldn't it have been more powerful to see a bunch of LGBT artists up there instead?
Danity Kane announced during the pre-show that they're getting back together.
Sure, we were surprised. We just didn't really care. Did you?
