You've probably already heard about the 300 sandwiches woman, but if you haven't, here's the short and sweet: Stephanie Smith, writer at the New York Post, shared (in a story in the Post, naturally) that her boyfriend Eric would only marry her if she made him 300 sandwiches. She started making him sandwiches and blogging about it, and now says she's 124 sandwiches away from an engagement ring.
Stephanie explained that while Eric was the cook in their relationship, to him "sandwiches are like kisses or hugs. Or sex." So one afternoon last summer, she made him a turkey and avocado sandwich. To which Eric excitedly responded, "Honey, you’re 300 sandwiches away from an engagement ring!"
The internet (predictably) freaked out at statements like:
"Each morning, he would ask, 'Honey, how long you have been awake?' 'About 15 minutes,' I’d reply. 'You’ve been up for 15 minutes and you haven’t made me a sandwich?'
Advice columnist Margo Howard ("Dear Margo") opined on Twitter, "My dear, get out NOW. If you marry him, you will be the maid."
A few days later, Stephanie spoke out, attempting to explain. "The blog started as a lighthearted joke between boyfriend and girlfriend," she wrote in the New York Post. "I presented it to the world because I thought at least one person would find the humor in the idea of sandwiches for an engagement ring."
And while many sites wrote angry pieces about this arrangement, many women found the Post story kind of charming and funny. Seems a little like a great romantic comedy, doesn't it?
Yes, we're skeptical about the real motivations behind this plot.
Stephanie and Eric both work in the media -- in fact, Eric works for a start-up focused on empowering women -- where we see bloggers with a clever angle get book and movie deals on a weekly basis. While we don't doubt their relationship is real, we wonder if this joke was a bit of a stunt designed to outrage and intrigue. And perhaps grow a blog into a book and a movie -- and of course, she'll get the guy in the end.
Think we're cynical? Enjoy the couple's Today Show appearance.
But guys? Her sandwiches look really, really good. Fried zucchini and sliced tomato on a pretzel roll...we'd marry that.
