Boy, has Simon Cowell gotten himself into a big mess. Last week, we learned that the X Factor judge is expecting a baby with New York socialite Lauren Silverman, the wife of real estate tycoon (and Cowell's good buddy) Andrew Silverman. The scandal has now erupted into a public relations disaster for Cowell, as well as a divorce and custody battle between the Silvermans (who have been married for 10 years, and have a son together). Unplanned pregnancies are challenging enough without infidelity, fame and the tabloid media, so right now, everyone involved seems a little dazed. Still, details continue to emerge about Cowell and Silverman's affair -- and the more we learn, the more we realize we don't know. Here are 5 big questions about Cowell's baby daddy scandal that still don't have an answer.
How long has the affair been going on? Andrew only filed for divorce after learning that Lauren was pregnant. So how long had she and Cowell been carrying on behind his back? Early reports said that the affair started this spring. Since then, photos have emerged that appear to show the pair kissing in August 2012, over a year ago -- on a private yacht chartered by Andrew Silverman! Cowell has been close friends with Andrew and Lauren for seven years; it's just a question of when that friendship turned into something more.
Are Cowell and Silverman a couple now? You'd think so, right? But a Daily Mail report claims that Cowell ended the relationship six weeks ago. Reportedly, he found out that Lauren was pregnant after they broke up. On the other hand, a friend told People that Lauren is "ecstatic to be with Simon."
Did Silverman "trap" Cowell by deliberately getting pregnant? Oh boy. Naturally, because the whole world knows that Cowell didn't want kids, Lauren must be an evil harpy who tricked him into impregnating her because she wants all the money! This misogynistic theory is being supported by The Daily News, which revealed that Lauren "seduced" her high school English teacher when she was 16. We have two things to say about this: 1) Lauren Silverman is already married to a very, very rich man, and 2) When a high school teacher sleeps with a teenage student, it's the teacher, not the student, who committed a crime.
Did Cowell destroy the Silvermans' marriage? According to sources close to Lauren, the marriage had problems outside of Cowell. "She was definitely unhappy in her marriage and it's been a while that the marriage was not great," a friend told People. Lauren's stepfather told The Daily Mail that Andrew was away on business most of the time, leaving Lauren feeling abandoned. "I mean, she had the money but you can't cuddle up to five Gucci bags," he said. Andrew's friends, however, say that the marriage was fine. "The suggestion that she was an estranged wife who fell into another man’s arms is not the case," one told the NY Post.
Will Lauren lose her other child over the scandal? Lauren actually has the most to lose here. Even though Cowell is the one who slept with his best friend's wife, she's getting the brunt of the blame from both the media and her husband -- who has filed for primary custody of their 7-year-old son. According to TMZ, Andrew claims that Lauren is a "deficient" parent, who disappears for "long periods of time" to hang out with celebrities. If all three parties can't reach an agreement quickly, this could get very ugly.
