This weekend I took my two daughters, ages 10 and 13, out to dinner and a movie. For our meal we chose pizza and for entertainment I chose You Again.
What surprised me as we looked for seats in the theater, was how many parents had also taken their daughters to see this film. There were several moms and even a few dads hanging out with their girls. It turns out that as parents, we made the right choice.
The film is a charming look at what happens when the nerdy girl is forced to confront the popular girl, years after high school graduation. Here are five reasons why You Again is a great pick for a mother-daughter date.
1. Popular Vs. Unpopular:
Whether you ruled your school or ate lunch by yourself, you can relate to the story line. Marni (Kristen Bell) has managed to overcome zits, braces and bad hair and become a successful publicist. The now clear-skinned, attractive and recently promoted exec, returns home for her brother’s wedding, only to learn that he's engaged to the former head cheerleader who tortured her throughout high school. Confident in her new life and image, Marni prepares herself for battle only to find that the evil JoJo has been replaced by a very sweet Joanna (Odette Yustman) who acts like the two are meeting for the first time. Eventually the true Joanna is revealed, but not before bringing out the worst in Marni.
2. The Frenemies:
Marni’s mom Gail (Jamie Lee Curtis), a popular cheerleader in high school, is shocked when Joanna’s Aunt Ramona (Sigourney Weaver), turns out to be her less popular former friend. Ramona is now extremely wealthy and heads one of the most popular luxury hotel chains. Both ladies allow their envy and resentment to emerge and become involved in childish antics. Curtis and Weaver create a fantastic comedic duo and will have you and your daughters roaring with laughter.
3. Dance Fever:
The film is full of great dance scenes, but my favorite takes place at the wedding planner’s studio. Kristin Chenoweth makes a dazzling entrance as wedding planner Georgia and leads the ladies in a dance-off.
4. Betty White:
I love that young ki are getting to experience a wonderful actress like Betty White. The 88-year-old actress shines in the role of Marni’s Grandma Bunny, dentures and all. Her timing is perfect --when Joanna’s ex runs into them and asks for her number, Bunny offers her own digits and adds that she is on both Facebook and, as she calls it, "the Twitter."
5. It’s a Family Affair:
You Again is strictly PG, so there is no worry of inappropriate language or suggestive material. The film focuses on the importance of family and friends. Marni survives high school with the love and support of her parents and older brother. As an adult, it’s her family who help her realize what is important in life. The lessons learned by the characters can all be takeaways for your daughters.
You Again is a heart-warming comedy, with a positive message for young girls: the perfect way to spend an evening at the movies with your daughter.
