You drag yourself to the gym only to find renewed energy – even euphoria – when you hear a song you love. A sluggish treadmill mile magically turns into two and seems effortless. Thank the beat: When volunteers worked out to music by Queen, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Madonna—music specially chosen to be in perfect tempo with their treadmill stride rate—exercisers worked out 15 percent longer and enjoyed it more, says exercise and music researcher Costas Karageorghis, Ph.D., of Brunel University in the U.K.

So get rhythm. When you exercise in sync with your favorite tunes you may find it too much fun to stop.
