Cellulite is caused by genes, age and poor circulation
Garlic and onions boost circulation
Pineapple and papaya tighten and smooth skin

Cellulite happens to a lot women, regardless of their waist size or fitness routine. The appearance of cellulite is largely affected by our genes, age and hormones. But healthy circulation can help improve the appearance of existing cellulite. Bad circulation can lead to fat deposits that are trapped within the connective tissue, which contributes to the “cottage cheese” appearance of cellulite. But did you know there are foods that can give your circulation a boost and help get rid of cellulite? For example, garlic relaxes blood vessels, thinning the blood and improving circulation. Onions and complex carbohydrates also give our circulation a boost. Good circulation in your cardiovascular and lymphatic systems keep your fluid levels in balance, while flushing toxins out of the body, getting rid of those fat deposits and maintaining smoother looking thighs. Use these six other foods to blast away lumpy-looking skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Sunflower Seeds

Packed with vitamin E, potassium, zinc and selenium, sunflower seeds also contain vitamin B6, which helps metabolize proteins and strengthen and repair connective tissue. As a natural diuretic, B6 also helps to eliminate excess water and bloating that can make cellulite more visible. Try adding a tablespoon of sunflower seeds into a salad or hot breakfast cereal, or eat them plain as a snack.

Chili and cayenne peppers

Research has also shown that capsaicin, the major ingredient in cayenne and chili peppers, can aid in weight loss: its thermogenic effect increases the rate at which the body burns energy. Studies have shown that a spicy meal, like a bowl of chili, can provide a temporary rise in metabolism of about 8 percent greater than a person’s typical metabolic rate. Eating spicy foods also boosts satiety, leading diners to consume less food overall. And chilies are a good source of vitamins C, E, B6 and potassium.

Ginger Root

Whether you’re fighting a cold or fighting cellulite, ginger could be your cure! Used for centuries, ginger works as a natural detoxifier and can suppress the appetite and rev up your metabolism. It also aids digestion and improves circulation, which can help rid the body of cellulite. Add a cup of ginger tea to your daily diet, either in bag form or steep a few slices of fresh ginger root in hot water, which offers the most benefits.

Barley

Barley has the lowest glycemic index of all common grains. Because it takes longer to digest, it leads to a smaller spike in your blood glucose and insulin levels. High amounts of insulin can promote fat storage in the body, and excess carbohydrate consumption can lead to weight gain. That's never good when you're trying to fight cellulite!  Instead of rice or potatoes, have a ½ cup of barley with your veggies and meat.

Pineapple and Papaya

Pineapples and papayas offer two strong digestive enzymes, bromelain and papain, respectively, that break up proteins and stimulate collagen production to further prevent cellulite from forming. In Bali, women scoop out the papaya flesh and rub the peel on jiggly thighs to tighten and smooth. Massaging the fruit into the skin surface in a circular motion can enhance circulation, thereby plumping the skin and reducing the appearance of cellulite. You don't have to go that far-- try eating ½ cup of either fruit, cubed, with a scoop of cottage cheese and some sunflower seeds instead! Or make a quick tropical breakfast smoothie by blended 1 cup papaya and 3/4 cup of unsweetened coconut milk. Add a little shredded coconut to garnish.

Cinnamon

This spice is packed with antioxidants and has been shown to increase circulation, helping to eliminate toxins, and diminish the skin dimpling that cellulite causes. Just one half teaspoon is all you need to reap the benefits! Sprinkle cinnamon on your oatmeal, cereal, whole-grain toast or in your tea or coffee.

Avoid salt, caffeine and other things that make cellulite worse.

There are a few foods to take out of your diet -- if not cut down significantly -- to reduce cellulite. Too much salt makes the body retain water, interrupting it from flushing out the toxins the cause those lumps and bumps. (Check food labels for high sodium levels and leave the shaker on the table). Also avoid caffeine, saturated fat, white flour and cut your alcohol intake to no more than one glass of wine per night.

Know that there isn't a magic solution.

Lotions, potions and diet tricks might diminish the appearance of cellulite for some women, but they're usually only a temporary solution. In fact, most doctors admit that by scientific standards, there isn't really a “cure” for cellulite. If nothing seems to be working for you, you’re certainly not alone: up to 90 percent of American women report having cellulite. Even celebrities have it -- they just have Photoshop.

Get a massage for a temporary fix.

Getting a message to diminish the appearance of cottage-cheese skin? It sounds like a win-win. Endermologie, as this form of massage therapy is officially called, can puff up the top layer of your skin by using tools like rollers, light, and suction cups. Though this will help to hide cellulite, the results tend to last for just a few days. But hey, if you’re headed for a weekend trip to the beach, nothing wrong with adding this to your list of things to do before you go.

Use coffee grinds to scrub away cellulite.

The key ingredient in the at-home remedy is the caffeine in the coffee grinds -- it boosts fat metabolism and reduces the fluid retention in the fat beneath the skin. In other words, it makes that cellulite less visible. For a temporary solution to your cellulite problem start here:  rub olive oil over your trouble areas and then, using a circular motion, rub a mixture of ½ cup coffee grinds and ¼ cup brown sugar over the oiled spot. The brown sugar will act as an exfoliant, while the olive oil will help to soften your skin.
