George Washington

The father of our nation, George Washington, grew up without a father. Augustine Washington, a slave-owning tobacco planter, died when George was only 11 years old. George and his four siblings were raised from there on out by their mother, Mary Ball Washington, who was left fatherless herself at age 3 and orphaned at age 13. Having lived to see her son take office in 1789, Mary passed away on August 26th of that same year. George Washington’s step-grandson, George Washington Parke Custis, wrote of Mary, “A mother has not lived better fitted to give the tone and character of real greatness to her child.”
