From Men Are Like Fish: What Every Woman Needs To Know About Catching a Man

Want to snag a good man even in the face of fierce competition? Author Steve Nakamoto offers six tips on how to win at the game of love by attracting only the best catches. Here's what he has to say:

In their book, Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind, business consultants Al Ries and Jack Trout discuss strategies for marketing products or services so they get "positioned" in the forefront of the buyer's mind.

To help position yourself in the forefront of a man's mind, here are some important guidelines to consider:

Be first. Being first is the simplest way to position yourself ahead of the competition. Those who wait only get what is left. Find out what you want and slip in ahead of the crowd.

Size up your competition. Battles are more easily won when your strengths are matched up against your rival's weaknesses. Be smart and only compete when the match-ups tilt more favorably in your favor. Otherwise, don't compete at all.

Be different, be unique. If you can't be the best in one category, then be the best in another category. You can outshine your competition, for example, by being sharper, wiser, kinder, stronger, more confident, more passionate, or a better listener. The battle of talents has predictable results: the one with the most talent always wins. Shift the playing field onto one of your other areas (heart or character) of strengths. Fight your battles there instead.

Outclass your rivals. Rise above petty competition. Don't get caught up in putting down your rivals. If you can't compete with class, choose not to compete at all. Maintain your integrity and dignity. The classy manner in which you play the game of love also gets noticed and appreciated by the more enlightened and mature fish (men).

Defend yourself against attackers. Learn to shield and defend yourself from unfriendly attacks. Realize that some people build themselves up by tearing others down. Don't let them do that to you. If you want others to respect you, be sure to respect yourself by standing firm against unfriendly, intentional, inappropriate, and excessive verbal attacks.

Make good alliances. One of the best ways to disarm your rivals is by associating yourself with good angling buddies. These friends can support and protect you from the unkind attacks of your rivals. Surround yourself with quality friends to help you protect your backside.
