8-Months-Pregnant Malaysian Woman Competing in the Olympics!

Though she won't be the first pregnant woman to ever compete at the Olympics, Nur Suryani Mohamed Taibi will be the farthest along at eight months!

It’s hard to imagine being eight months pregnant and competing in the Olympics, but next week one Maylasian mom-to-be will be doing just that! Nur Suryani Mohamed Taibi is not only the first woman to represent Malaysia in the sport of shooting, she’s one of just a handful pregnant competitors in history. According to The New York Times, she’ll be the farthest along of any of them, a full eight months pregnant by the time the competition starts.

Ranked 47th in the world in the 10-meter air rifle event, the 29-year-old logistics officer in the Malaysian Navy discovered she was pregnant just two days before qualifying for the Olympics in January. While her country’s officials initially suggested she step down, Taibi says her performance has actually improved during her pregnancy --she believes the extra weight has made her more grounded and stable. After receiving her doctor’s okay to fly, Taibi said that she’s excited to compete and now has the full support of her country and her sport’s governing body, both of which are pleased to see her taking the place she earned.

Taibi’s strategy at the Olympics is simple, she says, “My aim is to do everything perfect and then the result will come after. If you aim for a gold medal, you put yourself under pressure.” And what of her often-kicking baby? “I will talk to her, say, ‘Mum is going to shoot just for a while. Can you just be calm?”’

Regardless of how she does in London, Taibi is sure to end up the role model of a lifetime to at least one young woman -- she’s carrying a baby girl.
