9 Problems You Can Solve By Eating Vegan

Flirting. It’s the mainstream way to test something out, see if you’re interested, and hopefully (if things go well) start a relationship. Alicia Silverstone, celebrity, vegan, and author of The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight and Saving the Planet, says you can “flirt” with veganism if you’re not yet ready to commit to a serious relationship. “By having a flirting diet it’s a way to take baby steps into the whole thing,” Silverstone says. “You can just take the information and do what you can with it."

We talked to Alicia about 9 problems that she solved by eating vegan.

1. Digestion problems or constipation
"I’ve helped many friends who are constipated," she explains. "People poo every two days, or sometimes even once every seven days—it’s crazy! I’ve helped friends who used to have these problems and do not have these problem anymore now that they eat a plant-based diet. It’s an easy easy way to handle that."

2. Dull skin
"That was the first thing that anyone noticed when I went vegan," she says. "My skin has only gotten better and better over the years. That’s one of the biggest benefits, you get a glow that you just can’t get when you eat meat and dairy. Everything is brighter and your skin reflects that in a glowing way."

3. High grocery bill

"It’s not just lowering your grocery bill, it’s lowering your life bill," she corrects. "You’re so much healthier and you have less problems and issues; your life is improved so you don’t visit the doctor as often. Things like vegetables don’t cost nearly as much as meat or dairy."

4. Heavy and time-consuming home-cooked meals
"I love, love, love food—I never stopped loving food," she says. "In my book, there are amazing recipes, and they’re all really easy. There’s no deprivation on this lifestyle; my palate has only gotten more sophisticated and demanding of interesting and delicious flavors. Real, natural, whole foods provide me with that. My book gives you recipes that will blow your mind."

5. Gassiness or gas pains
"I used to be really gassy before I was vegan," she says. "It’s only if I eat something naughty that I get gassy again. Dairy is a real gas maker and it makes you so stinky."

6. Weak immune system, allergies
"There are so many amazing doctors that are curing heart disease, cancer and diabetes, all through science," she says. "[Veganism] definitely builds your immune system—most people are walking around with very compromised immune systems because they’re eating dairy."

7. Dry hair
"I have a lot of hair," she says. "It’s long. Most people think that they are extensions. My hair has just been getting stronger and healthier as I go along."

8. Brittle nails

"My nails changed drastically," Silverstone explains. "There was a huge, noticeable difference. Before I changed my diet I could bend my nails quite easily; if I pushed on them they would bend and they had white marks on them. And now you cannot bend my nail; it’s hard as a rock. There are no white marks on them anymore. I know that is a very good sign of health."

9. Weight gain
"Once I really gave up the sugar, the processed foods, and the white flower, I lost so much weight," she says. "It puts your body into its perfect shape, that’s what it did for me. My body effortlessly took its shape."

There, problems solved. Though you may not give up meat and dairy in order to solve all of your problems, flirting with The Kind Diet and a vegan lifestyle is a sure-fire way to look and feel better, with an added bonus of saving the planet.
"I really want people to feel their best and be able to heal, nourish, and get stronger and more beautiful as they age," Silverstone concludes.
