"If a salon looks shady or dirty, walk out," says Michele Pierno, who's in product development at Kiss, the nail-product company.
That may seem like common sense, but take a look at how quickly your salon turns over clients. "If you're going to a salon that's banging people out one after the other, just know that you get what you pay for," Pierno warns.
What might the cost be of visiting an unsanitary salon? "The most common risks would be fungal infections in the nail or on the skin," says Sheena McCallum, a former esthetician who's now a social media and beauty consultant for Spa Boutique, an online spa retailer. "Bacterial infections could occur if there were open cuts or sores and the tools weren't sanitized properly."
