Remember Abigail Breslin, the adorable little girl from Signs and Little Miss Sunshine? She's 17 years old now, and for a Hollywood starlet, that can only mean one thing: time to show the world she's not a child anymore. And what's the quickest way to accomplish that? Why, naked pictures, of course.
Yes, like many young women before her, the underage actress has posed for a series of provocative photos. Celebrity photographer Tyler Shields, who directed Breslin's upcoming thriller Final Girl (see trailer below), says he wanted his risque photos of the actress to be "simple but timeless."
"She loves them. I think anyone would love to have these photos taken of them," says Shields, who snapped the actress taking a bubble bath. In another photo, she's naked except for a sheet, and sucking on a heart-shaped lollipop. Shields can argue for "simple" and "timeless," but he obviously wasn't going for "subtle."
So here's what we're not going to do. We're not going to clutch our pearls and sigh about how innocence is gone. We're not going to shame Breslin for putting on lots of eyeliner and asking Shields to pass her a lollipop.
In fact, we don't begrudge the actress her decision one bit. She's testing her boundaries, like any teenager. She's also doing what all actresses who grow up in the spotlight do: she's trying to show the world, in the simplest way possible, that she's a grown-up now. And here we are, talking about it. Mission accomplished.
That said, we find it incredibly frustrating that there's no better way for famous young women to announce "I've arrived!" than to pose for naked photos. From Miley Cyrus to Kendall Jenner, any media-savvy starlet knows that they'll be rewarded with tons of attention for the simple act of taking their clothes off. It's just sad that another rite of passage doesn't really exist.
It's never been easy for actresses or musicians to transition out of child stardom; just ask Shirley Temple. The public will always be slow to get over those first impressions. We only wish that more young stars felt confident making that leap through talent alone. A few have managed it, like Natalie Portman and Emma Watson. We just hate the idea that posing nude is a necessary step in any young woman's career. Some things shouldn't be job requirements -- especially not for teenagers.
