If you’ve ever scoured YouTube for a step-by-step to creating, say, the perfect smoky eye or flawless red lip, you know that women around the globe are uploading pretty much every type of makeup how-to that you could imagine. The latest to have gone viral, however, proves just how emotionally transformative cosmetics can be. Cassandra Bankson, a 19-year-old model and YouTube star, has suffered from chronic cystic acne that was so traumatizing she transferred schools and graduated high school two years early -- and she’s turned her pain into a DIY makeup video to help others with the same concerns.
Being the target of bullying caused Bankson to become antisocial, she told TODAY’s Savannah Guthrie in an interview that ran April 19. Instead of hanging out with friends after school, she would isolate herself and “do homework, play with [her] cats and learn how to put on makeup.”
After perfecting a foundation routine, Bankson decided it was time to come clean with her acne problem and share her mesmerizing transformation with the world. In her video, Bankson walks viewers through a 10-minute tutorial in which she expertly hides the blemishes and scars that cover her face, neck, back and chest.
Since she first began posting makeup how-tos, Bankson’s videos have garnered over 6 million views, and with them, support from fans who face similar acne issues. The best lesson of all, we imagine? Learning that confidence and beauty are one in the same.
