The 2012 Billboard Music Awards were, like this year's Grammys, part tribute show to musicians the industry lost and part celebration of the year's biggest hitmakers. During the live telecast from Las Vegas' MGM Grand Hotel, Modern Family stars Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen presided over Sunday night's festivities that included moving tributes and another cool dozen awards for British pop star Adele.
Although the "Rolling in the Deep" singer wasn't present, Adele dominated the awards ceremony with her 12 wins, including the night's biggest honors of top artist, top Billboard 200 album, and top Hot 100 artist. Considering the amazing year Adele has enjoyed, it's no surprise her multi-platinum album 21 and its various hit singles helped Adele score so many awards.
The "Party Rock Anthem" guys LMFAO also had reason to celebrate, picking up six awards (including top digital songs artist and top Hot 100 Song), while Lil Wayne and Coldplay each nabbed four awards for their respective genres of rap and rock.
In the tributes portion of the show, Jordin Sparks and John Legend sang in memory of the late Whitney Houston, who was also honored with a posthumous Millennium Award given to her daughterBobbi Kristina Brown. The Beastie Boys' Adam "MCA" Yauch and disco's unforgettable Donna Summer were also celebrated, as was Robin Gibb, whose death was announced just before the ceremony began.
