Don’t go with an agency because it has the snazziest website -- or because it’s the first result in a Google search. It pays to the legwork to ensure that you’re choosing the best agency for you.
Start by getting word-of-mouth recommendations through friends or family who have adopted, or through online adoption support groups or even agency rating sites like Adoption Agency Ratings. If you’ve already narrowed it down to domestic or international -- or even to the individual country you’d like to adopt from -- look for sites that cater to your needs so you can discuss the pros and cons of agencies with those who have been there, done that. Don’t just go with testimonials supplied by the agency. “Adoption agencies will only offer families with overwhelmingly positive experiences,” Gilman says.
