When political power couple Al Gore and Tipper Gore announced on June 1 that their 40-year marriage was over, everyone in the media pretty much fell over in shock. Two weeks later, we're all finally beginning to get up, dust ourselves off, and try to figure out what went wrong. On Tuesday, Star Magazine posted a scandalous theory online: Al Gore left Tipper for another woman. Namely, Star claims that the two-term U.S. vice president has been having an affair with Laurie David, an environmental activist who was married to comedian Larry David from 1993 to 2007. Even more shocking: Star claims they've been in a relationship for two years.
Laurie David, who has been campaigning for years against global warming, was one of the producers on Gore's 2006 documentary An Inconvenient Truth. The two couples were friends before the Davids' divorce (which happened amid rumors that Laurie was having an affair with her summer home contractor). Star's anonymous source reports: "Al and Laurie went from friends to lovers. It couldn't be avoided."
While Al Gore hasn't responded to allegations of cheating, Laurie David immediately denied Star's story. "It's a total fabrication," she told the Huffington Post. "I adore both Al and Tipper. I look at them both as family. And I have happily been in a serious relationship since my divorce." Her agent echoed her statement to People, saying, "This report is completely, patently false. I have no idea where it started from or why, but it is absolutely, positively and patently untrue."
Star will be releasing its full story in Friday's issue. But unless they've been hiding some pretty persuasive evidence, we'll hold out for the next divorce theory -- or better yet, for Al and Tipper to tell their sides of the story.
