Forget Ghosts of Mississippi; the best courtroom drama of Alec Baldwin's career is happening right now. And it's real. On Tuesday, the 30 Rock actor testified in the trial of his alleged stalker, Genevieve Sabourin. Trial footage isn't available to the public, but according to the New York Post, things got pretty crazy. There were tears, there was shouting, there was a stunning betrayal. Just reading about it made us miss Law & Order.
First, some background: Genevieve Sabourin is a Canadian actress who met Alec Baldwin on a film shoot in 2000. In 2010, they were re-introduced by a mutual friend, Martin Bregman (more on him in a minute), and had lunch together. Baldwin says that he gave her some career advice, then went on his merry way. Sabourin says he slept with her. What actually happened isn't that important, because the trial is about what happened next: Sabourin decided to stalk Alec Baldwin until he agreed to leave his now-wife Hilaria Thomas for her. And by "stalk," we mean hundreds of crazy emails, constant phone calls, threats of violence, unannounced visits to his homes -- the works. Baldwin took out a restraining order against her last year, and she's now being charged with 23 counts of harassment and one count of stalking.
According to Sabourin's lawyer, "she never had the intent to harass, annoy, alarm, stalk, or cause any inconvenience to Mr. and Mrs. Baldwin. She merely sought closure for a crumbling romantic relationship."
Which brings us to Tuesday's courtroom craziness. For starters, Alec Baldwin cried -- literally -- on the stand, while testifying that he was afraid Gabourin might physically harm him or his wife.
That's nothing compared to Sabourin's outbursts. During Baldwin's testimony, she kept on shouting things at him like, "You're lying! Why are you lying?" and "You delete women after sex!" At one point, when Baldwin denied an affair, she yelled "You have a scar right here!" and pointed to her hip. When Hilaria took the stand later, Sabourin reportedly shouted, "You're going to hell!" (Her poor, poor defense lawyer.)
Even though Sabourin appears to be somewhat unbalanced, she has an unexpected ally: Martin Bregman, the producer who introduced her to Baldwin. Although he's supposedly Alec's friend, Bregman didn't hesitate to tell the NY Daily News that, yes, Baldwin was sleeping with Hilaria and Genevieve at the same time. Bregman says that Sabourin is not a stalker, and Baldwin simply made up the accusation in order to hide their affair. But according to Baldwin's testimony, Bregman was the one sleeping with Sabourin back in 2010. So much drama!
Baldwin is insistent that he never did anything to encourage Sabourin's behavior. Curiously, he did admit on the stand that he sent her an email urging her to have safe sex.
"That was personal," Baldwin noted.
"Like the sex we had!" Sabourin shouted back. (Okay, that was a pretty good one.)
Just like his alleged stalker, Baldwin is having some trouble keeping his temper in check. Outside the courthouse, the actor reportedly hurled insults at a NY Post photographer -- the same photographer he was accused of attacking back in February. Then on his way out, Baldwin told him, "I hope you choke to death."
So basically, this trial is what happens when you pit a notoriously hotheaded celebrity against a jilted drama queen. We have no idea what the outcome will be, except that it definitely won't be boring.
