Alec Baldwin on Brother's Arrest: "I Don't Think He's Going to Jail"

Stephen Baldwin was arrested for tax evasion, but his big brother seems confident that he won't end up behind bars

Stephen Baldwin has been arrested for failing to pay his taxes, but his brother Alec Baldwin thinks it's all going to work out fine in the end.

Stephen was booked by the Rockland County police department in New York and took this hilariously awesome mug shot not long before his brother made an appearance on Piers Morgan Tonight. Alec stood up for his brother, who reportedly failed to file a New York State personal income tax in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

"I don't think he's going to jail," Alec said. "I know that he's in a negotiated settlement...Things that were online, which were...that's what media today does, they try to tilt it the way that they need it to be to sell copies and what have you, and sell online hits to their sites."

As for the arrest, the 30 Rock star says that his brother's appearance was pre-scheduled by the District Attorney's office.

"We're talking about him being arrested and taken into custody and what have you, [but] this was all prearranged with the D.A. for him to go in and make an appearance," he explains. "They've got to shake him down, and they've got to make him walk that gauntlet because that's their procedure, even though steps have been made to begin the process of remediating that money, and down payments have been made."

Alec adds, "His problem as of today is being cleared up, but they did drag him through that mud today."

District Attorney Thomas P. Zugibe issued his own statement following Stephen's arrest, saying, "At a time when Rockland County and New York State face severe fiscal shortfalls, we cannot afford to allow wealthy residents to break the law by cheating on their taxes. The defendant's repetitive failure to file returns and pay taxes over a period of several years contributes to the sweeping cutbacks and closures in local government and in our schools. My Office will continue to investigate and prosecute those who cheat our tax system for their personal gain."
