Alicia Keys On Her New App, Her Nana and Finding Time to Journal -- with a Two-Year-Old!!

In an exclusive interview, iVillage's newest Guest Editor, Alicia Keys, talks about the release of her innovative new children's app she helped create, plus she reveals she's just like us when it comes to not having enough time to document her little one's every move!

Alicia Keys is one proud mama -- proud of her 2-year-old son Egypt, for sure, but also proud of another birth: the launch Thursday of her first-ever children's app -- an app that is so cool you will actually want your child to play on the iPad, instead of hiding your coveted iPad hoping the kids never find it like we do in our house!

"It's unbelievable," Alicia beamed as she gave us a sneak peek of The Journals of Mama Mae and LeeLee app, which she described as part interactive book, part game, part fantasy, during an exclusive interview at a New York City hotel. Yes, there is music too, Alicia's own music, which the Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter thinks is pretty darn good if she does say so herself! "I really like it," she said, as she snapped along to the beat. We like it too!

If you didn't already love Alicia, you'll love her when you hear how she's just like us! One of the coolest aspects of the new app is the ability for your child to write journal entries, just as the main character in the app, Mama Mae, a grandmother, writes in a journal, sharing stories with her 7-year-old granddaughter, LeeLee, which take them to faraway places.

Writing in a journal "has been a really big part of my life," said Alicia. "I believe that's why I can write." So I had to ask if she were still journaling now, if she were one of those moms who was chronicling her son's every move with daily journal entries? If she felt guilty like we all do for not writing down when her baby smiled for the first time today? Oh yes, she's totally like us!

"For the first year, I did pretty well," said Alicia laughing, referring to the first year of lovely Egypt's life. And now? "A bit fallen off, I admit." Not to worry, Alicia! We can completely relate!

The inspiration for the app, Alicia says, comes from her own life growing up and her grandmother, whom she called her Nana. "My grandmother has been a huge inspiration for me and is just a defining light for me," Alicia told us. "She always is."

How proud she'd be of her granddaughter who has inspired women of all ages -- and now, through her app, will no doubt inspire little girls too.
