Exclusive Sneak Peek of Alicia Keys' Music for Her Newest Creation -- A Children's App!

iVillage's newest Guest Editor, Alicia Keys, gives us exclusive access to one of the songs that she created for an innovative new children's app set to go on sale Thursday, Oct. 25!

It’s hard to know what Alicia Keys is prouder of right now: her new album, Girl on Fire, which will be out on Nov. 27 or the unique and innovative new children’s storytelling app The Journals of Mama Mae and LeeLee -- inspired by her relationship with her late grandmother -- and infused with original music from the 14-time Grammy Award winner herself!

And how cool! As part of Alicia’s role as iVillage Guest Editor this week (pinch us now!), she is giving us exclusive access to "Unlock Yourself," one of the songs she composed and performs on the app. Be the first of millions of Alicia Keys fans to hear it. Check it out below!

"I really like it," Alicia told us, when we asked about the app, which she described as an “interactive book ... a game ... a fantasy ... an interactive movie.” She beamed, “It is absolutely one of a kind.” We agree as it encourages kids to explore through music, games, and especially journaling, which Keys says has been a really big part of her life. “Writing, journaling ... I believe that’s why I can write,” she told us during our exclusive interview.

The app centers around a 7-year-old girl named LeeLee and her relationship with her grandmother, Mama Mae, and is very much based on Alicia’s relationship with her own late grandmother, whom she called Nana. “When we were creating the character descriptions for everyone in here, LeeLee’s and Mama Mae’s character description(s) came so closely from my experience growing up and my grandmother has been such a huge inspiration for me and just a defining light for me,” Alicia said. “She always is. So it’s beautiful. I love it.”

The new app, co-produced by Alicia Keys and her company, AK Worldwide, and Bento Box Interactive, will be available for download from the Apple App Store for the iPad, iPhone and iTouch beginning Thursday, Oct. 25th for $3.99, and shortly after will be available on other devices and platforms. But even before tomorrow, you have a chance for a free download. The first 100 people to send an email to mamamae@bentoboxinteractive.com will get a free download code.

Hear more from Alicia on the making of The Journals of Mama Mae and Lee Lee on Thursday, when, as iVillage Guest Editor, Alicia focuses on the importance and inspiration from intergenerational relationships.
