All-American 'Preppy' Looks for Less

These pieces are so classic, charming, and cheap, you won't mind adding several to your spring wardrobe!

Earlier this week, I had some time before an appointment and found myself wandering around Ralph Lauren’s Rugby store in New York City. Now, the “prepster” look has never really been my thing, but I think I’m ready to reconsider! I found myself falling head-over-heels for some of these items, like the demure sheer blouses and sexy-but-sporty shirtdresses. There’s definitely something to be said for classic, athletic-inspired clothing that gives off that “American-heritage” feel.

I got to thinking, how can I pull of this old-school look for a reasonable price? Preppy must-haves -- like polos, pleated skirts, and neckties -- are adorable for spring, and I’m all about wearing touches of the trend here and there in a way that doesn’t scream “schoolgirl.” I hit the jackpot at Aeropostalé, which has an array of pastel polo shirts that are just perfect for April and May workdays. Check out the Multi-Shade Stripe Jersey Polo (shown at right; $14.75 at Aeropostalé), which captures the coming season in a cute, feminine way. I also dig the White Ultra Skinny Denim Ankle Crop jeans (shown; just $22.25 at Aeropostalé, paired with a denim button-down and slim belt in a pop-color. This site also has an array of sporty, classic dresses, skirts, accessories and outerwear – at these prices, preppy never looked so good!
