What it means: A spell that unlocks doors and other lockable objects

When it's used: Hermione used this spell on a window lock when she and Harry rescued an ally from a professor's office in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

How you can use it: The Alohomora spell is perfect for a child who barricades himself in his room. No, the door won't magically open any more than if you say "Open, Sesame!" But, it could cool your kid down considerably if you say, "Are you going to unlock this door or am I going to have to say, 'Alohomora!'"
