Before she played the lovable Lily on How I Met Your Mother, before she even went to band camp in American Pie, Alyson Hannigan was Buffy's geeky best friend, Willow, on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. From the first season in 1997 to the last in 2003, audiences watched Willow transform from a shy, ordinary teen into a powerful, witchy woman. She's been straight and gay, good and evil. So, in the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer feature film, what will Willow be?
Absent.
Alyson Hannigan told Cinemablend that she will absolutely not appear the new movie -- not even a cameo -- because series creator Joss Whedon isn't involved.
Calling the film "a very big mistake," Hannigan said she speaks for the whole cast. "Not without Joss. Joss is the only reason that we would go back."
Hannigan's co-star Anthony Stewart Head, who played Buffy's mentor Giles on the TV show, has also said he won't be involved in the movie without Joss Whedon -- and that he wouldn't even want to see it. Ouch.
How is the Buffy movie being made without the support of the show's cast or the involvement of creator Whedon? Turns out the rights to the title are still owned by the producers who made the original 1992 Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie, years before the hit TV show. They see the new movie as a "relaunch" -- with new characters and a new slayer. As for Whedon, who also created the TV shows Angel, Firefly and Dollhouse... well, they just didn't ask for his input. Big mistake. When asked for comment by Entertainment Weekly, Whedon simply responded: "I hope it's cool."
