Is Amanda Bynes having a major meltdown -- or is she having the last laugh?
The former child star has startled her fans over the past several months with a dramatic new look and some very strange tweets (not to mention her ongoing legal problems). Amanda's behavior has gotten so absurd that some celebrity-watchers are wondering if it's a hoax.
The hoax theory was put forward by Hollywood.com at the end of March -- and things with Amanda have only gotten weirder since then. Take a look at this video she tweeted on Monday, captioned "I'm Sucking On A Sour Patch Kid Listening To Music Getting Ready For Tonight":
Weird, right? Even Miley Cyrus, of twerking-unicorn fame, has never posted a video quite this crazy. Factor in Amanda's announcement that an impostor has been posing as her, her declarations that she is suing all the tabloids, her insistence that she invented the phrase "lololol," and her weird come-on to rapper Drake, and it's all adding up to something highly irregular.
So is it possible that Amanda is pulling a Joaquin Phoenix and pretending to go off the deep end for the sake of re-inventing herself? Could those cheek piercings, like Phoenix's infamous bushy beard, be a costume? As Hollywood.com points out, Bynes began her career as a sketch comedian, and by all evidence, survived her teen years in the public eye without having a breakdown. So she could be faking it now. (It would definitely be her most convincing performance yet!)
We also have to wonder why her Twitter account is still not verified. An even crazier theory would be that maybe it's a fake account run by someone who happens to look a whole lot like Amanda Bynes. But then wouldn't the real Amanda have come forward by now? (Okay, we know -- that one's a little far-fetched!)
Maybe we're just skeptical after falling for Justin Bieber's nude photos prank last year. But, of course, that wasn't nearly as elaborate -- or as worrying.
It's tough to speculate, though, because if Amanda's in trouble, she's really in trouble. Furthermore, her troubles with the law (the DUI arrest, the hit-and-run charges) are no joke, even if Bynes insists that she's not at fault. Maybe Bynes is secretly orchestrating her own "meltdown," but at the moment, it's tough to tell the truth from the lies. We only hope she knows the difference.
