Forget the typical media images of a hysterical woman flat on her back and screaming her way through labor -- we here at iVillage love real-life depictions of strong mamas giving birth. So we were captivated by yet another stunning birth photo from the National Geographic Photo Contest 2011.
The entry, titled "Between Two Worlds," captures a water birth and the amazing moment when the mother guides her baby into the world.
We know there will be people who will whine that birth photos should be kept private. But we think images like this send a powerful message: That birth, for all its pain and messiness, is beautiful -- and so are the powerful mamas who deliver.
