Randy Jackson. Jennifer Lopez. Steven Tyler.
After weeks of speculation, the new judging panel on Fox's American Idol is now official. Granted, it's not much of a surprise. Ever since Simon Cowell stepped down, followed quickly by Ellen DeGeneres and then Kara Diogardi, Tyler and Lopez have been mentioned as possible replacements. Of course, for a few weeks there, it looked like Fox was refusing to meet J.Lo's diva demands. But that's all apparently been sorted out!
Now the only question is whether Tyler and Lopez liven up the proceedings.
The 62-year-old Aerosmith frontman's certainly a live wire, which is good. He was applying guyliner before Adam Lambert was born. With his dramatic fashions and perpetually wacky hair, he'll definitely add sparks to the bench before he even opens that huge mouth. And Tyler's got the manic energy to riff about the contestants' song choices, sex appeal, etc.
Of course, news reports over the last year have hinted that Tyler is spinning out of control. Last summer, he had to cancel the rest of Aerosmith's concert tour after he fell offstage and injured himself. In December, he went to rehab for a painkiller addiction. Then came rumors that the band was splitting up. Though Aerosmith has soldiered on, there's definitely been some conflict between Tyler and his bandmate, Joe Perry. Check out this clip of Perry pushing Tyler offstage during a concert last month.
As for Lopez, it's harder to picture her in this gig. For years, the 41-year-old singer made headlines as a sexy and fiery pop star who carried on high-profile romances with the likes of P. Diddy and Ben Affleck. But her last two albums didn't even go platinum in the U.S., and younger music fans are a lot more fascinated by, say, Lady GaGa. And as fierce as J.Lo appears in her videos, she's actually sweet and even a little soft-spoken in interviews. Apart from her fashions, will she be entertaining, like Tyler? Probably not.
On the other hand, her pop star credentials make her the perfect judge of a show like American Idol. Its contestants are competing for a shot at a career just like hers. If anyone knows what being a pop star requires, "Jenny from the Block" does!
Both new judges have gotten a stamp of approval from Simon Cowell. “I think they are good people," Cowell told Extra. "Jennifer, I got to know quite well, and I’ve never met Steven before, but I think it would be interesting."
Even Lambert -- one of the most famous Idol contestants -- had good things to say about the choice. "I think Steven Tyler's obviously an icon," he recently told a Miami radio station. "I think it's really cool -- it will give it some cred [and] I think J. Lo gives them some cred. She's urban pop -- hopefully they can find some urban pop artists."
The truth is, everyone's got an opinion about Idol, and no one really knows what's going to happen. The only thing we know for sure is that Season 10 is going to be a lot different than Seasons 1-9. And I, for one, can't wait to see how it pans out.
