Is this really the 12th season of American Idol? Yep, you were 11 years younger when this singing competition first hit the air. Is it still worth watching when its two-day premiere begins on Wednesday (at 8 p.m. ET on Fox)? You bet it is! Here's why:
Nicki Minaj is not really "a crazy psycho, you guys." "It's about the contestants," she recently told Ellen DeGeneres. "We have a lot of great talent, and I don't want anyone on the panel to say something too crazy because then I don't want to look like a crazy psycho again. I am not really a crazy psycho, you guys." Watch the interview here:
…But she of the neon wigs does appear to be the heart and soul of season 12. Several critics and fans who've seen the 45-minute preview claim that Minaj is the most entertaining part of it. When describing "Nicki's massive, scene-stealing, scenery-chewing presence," Rolling Stone's Lyndsey Parker reluctantly admits that "it was totally The Nicki Minaj Show up there. And you know what? The Nicki Minaj Show was darn good TV."
And yes, the behind-the-scenes feud is real. The drama-rama between Mariah and Nicki is "what it is." "My thing is, I have to be myself," Carey told Entertainment Tonight last week. "And if that means in that moment, I don't hear you, I don't see you, you don't exist to me at this moment, that's what it is."
And Keith Urban's in the lion's den!
Because we've waited long enough! Enough with the hype already. For months now, even as The X Factor and The Voice were zeroing in on their final victors, we've been seeing promos from Idol about its upcoming season. And they're using fighting words. "It amazes me that still in season 12, we still get the best talent of any show in the game," says Jackson. "We get the crème de la crème right here." And in the promo below, Ryan Seacrest informs us that "the show that started it all is starting its best season yet…There's only one American Idol." So let's get to it, people! We're ready to be dazzled.
