A bunch of young, flirtatious, male and female models living in a house together, zealously competing for the title of Fairest of Them All? Now that's something for reality TV fans to smize about!
For the first time, America's Next Top Model (The CW, Fridays at 8 p.m. ET, on The CW) will feature models of both genders in Cycle 20, which will debut in summer of 2013. "I've been wanting to [incorporate male models] for quite some time and, yes, I'm the boss," creator Tyra Banks told Yahoo! Singapore in August. "But I have a boss and I have to convince him that a male version will do really well...Hopefully a male version will be sooner than later!" Turns out it was sooner!
No doubt a coed competition will have its perks, especially given the communal living situation. Will there be hookups? Will there be fights over the bathroom? This adds another dimension to the show, which has already begun to focus more on the models' personal lives.
Prior to Cycle 19, which is currently in progress, Banks and other producers decided that the show needed a shot in the arm. A major revamp ensued, with a new prize package, a new judge (male model Rob Evans joined Banks and PR maven Kelly Cutrone) and an opportunity for fans to vote on the winner. And Banks told the Hollywood Reporter that going forward, the series would return to its roots by telling more personal stories. "We got too much into teaching and challenges and photo shoots and eliminations," she said. "So you'll see in Cycle 19 so much of the story will be getting to know the girls, whether emotional or comedic."
Bringing guys into the mix seems a natural extension of that new strategy. What makes for a better story than a model sharing her breakfast cereal with the guys she club-hopped with the night before? Then it's off to a modeling challenge, where she must look her fiercest if she wants to beat the others for a highly coveted modeling contract.
Not only will someone's career get launched, but who knows—someone might find love, too!
