Andie MacDowell Takes a 'Risk,' Gets out in 'Front'

This Saturday and next, Lifetime is premiering movie versions of two crime novels by Patricia Cornwell: At Risk (April 10 at 9 p.m. ET) and The Front (April 17 at 9 p.m. ET). And Andie MacDowell stars in both.

Yep, that's right, Andie MacDowell. Remember her? Aside from her L'Oreal cosmetics commercials, the nearly 52-year-old model/actress hasn't logged much time on screen lately -- by choice. After a string of movie successes (some notable ones: 1989's Sex, Lies and Videotape, 1993's Groundhog Day and 1994's Four Weddings and a Funeral), MacDowell left Hollywood to raise her family in Asheville, North Carolina. True, she popped up in film and TV roles throughout the last decade, but her kids with ex-husband, Paul Qualley -- Justin, 23, Rainey, 21 and Sarah, 15 -- have always come first.

Nowadays, MacDowell is single again -- she split with second husband, Rhett Hartzog in 2004 -- and she's soon to be an empty nester. "Once Sarah leaves home," she told Fox News, "I'll probably spend more time in New York" -- and she's ready to get back to work. In the Lifetime movies, she plays Boston District Attorney Monique Lamont, a character she describes as "a real bitch" and "a narcissistic sex addict." But in her typically genteel manner, she admits that the nude scenes were hard for her. "It was embarrassing," she says. "I’m pretty shy, and yet I had to look at myself in the mirror and take my clothes off." Of course, it couldn't have been too bad -- this is Lifetime, after all, not HBO.

But MacDowell isn't stopping there. She already has three more movies in the pipe for this year: a drama, Happiness Runs, an edgy indie, Daydream Nation and a feel-good sports drama, The 5th Quarter. "I take really good care of myself and I insist to not go away," she says. "I want to work because it brings me a sense of self worth and dignity. I like my job…It may not be the best parts I used to get, or it may not be as easy, but I’m still here."
