Fans of Hello Kitty take notice! Another lovable white feline is on the way. Angel Cat Sugar, the first new character from Hello Kitty creator Yuko Shimizu in decades, is making her way from Asia and Europe to America this fall.
She’s making her stateside debut in a new namesake Nintendo DS game, expected to be available this autumn. In it, Sugar’s trio of mice friends are scattered across Angel Land and she must search for her playmates, while tending to the needs of others along the way.
Angel Cat Sugar’s story makes low-key addition to a character’s landscape filled with high-energy animation and ramped up violent imagery. After all, her respected “hobbies” include: reading, studying and bringing joy to those she meets. Angel Cat Sugar also obviously prefers harmony to discord since her best friends are three mice, named Basil, Thyme and Parsley. You can expect lots of peace, love and happiness theme in Sugar’s ongoing story.
In addition to the DS game, expect to see a series of Angel Cat Sugar books from Scholastic beginning in January 2010, and the full compliment of licensed toys, apparel and accessories after that. My girls and I are excited to meet Sugar through the books, but we’ll probably leave much of the ancillary merchandise on the shelf.
All the pieces are in place, but only time will tell if Angel Cat Sugar joins Hello Kitty as a beloved merchandising and multi-media powerhouse in the United States.
