Gossips will jump on any opportunity to speculate about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's nuptials -- so when Angelina recently swapped her diamond engagement ring for a gold band, the flurry of "secret wedding" rumors began anew. On Wednesday, Jolie put the rumors to rest with a quick "no" to a nosy paparazzo. Watch the TMZ video below!
The fact is, wedding rumors have been hounding Ms. Jolie and Mr. Pitt ever since they got together. Below, a timeline of the speculation surrounding Hollywood's most glamorous couple!
September 2005: George Clooney slams reports that the new couple were planning on getting married at his Italian villa. "People have said they were going to get married at my house," the actor-director says. "Well, I would know, and I can tell you there's not going to be a secret wedding."
September 2006: Pitt reveals that he has no immediate plans to marry Jolie, and he tells Esquire why. "Angie and I will consider tying the knot when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able," says the marriage equality champion.
June 2006: A month after the birth of their first biological child Shiloh, Jolie denies that a wedding will follow. "There is nothing in the air. The focus is the kids, and we are obviously extremely committed to the children and as parents together," she says at a press conference. "So that kind of says it for us, and to have a ceremony on top of it is nothing."
March 2008: While vacationing in New Orleans, the couple is rumored to have gotten married at a local church. People quashes the rumor.
October 2008: Jolie hints to Italian Vanity Fair that marriage is in the cards. "Usually people fall in love and everything revolves around the ritual of marriage; children are an afterthought. We did everything backwards, but sooner or later it will be the kids who ask us [to get married]," she explains. "You know, they see films and start asking questions. Such as, 'Why are Shrek and Fiona married and you're not?'"
January 2009: Pitt's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button co-star Taraji Henson accidentally refers to Brad as Angelina's "husband" at the premiere, kicking off another round of secret marriage rumors.
August 2009: “I have love in my life, a soul mate, absolutely," Pitt tells Parade. "When someone asked me why Angie and I don’t get married, I replied, ‘Maybe we’ll get married when it’s legal for everyone else.’ I stand by that, although I took a lot of flak for saying it -- hate mail from religious groups. I believe everyone should have the same rights."
June 2010: While insisting that she's not "against getting married," Jolie tells Vanity Fair that she's focused on the kids. "Children are clearly a commitment, a bigger commitment (than marriage). It's for life."
July 2010: Jolie tells Nightline that it would be "hard to say no to the kids" if they asked their parents to get married, but claims that "they're not asking," because "they are very aware that nothing's missing."
May 2011: Aaaand the kids have started asking."The kids ask about marriage. It's meaning more and more to them," Pitt tells USA Weekend. "So it's something we've got to look at."
October 2011: In Vanity Fair, Jolie shoots down the latest "secret wedding" reports.
April 2012: Just when it seemed like it might never happen, Pitt's rep tells People that Brad and Angie are officially engaged.
May 2012: "We actually, really and truly, have no date," Pitt says in response to rumors of an August wedding. "[Getting engaged] is just something that made sense to us, and certainly date-wise, it's just a rumor. We're still hoping that we can figure out marriage equality in the States before that date."
November 2012: "The time is nigh," says Brad, who claims that the couple still has no concrete wedding date. But, he adds, "it's soon. I got a good feeling about it."
