In an interview with Nightline airing Monday, Jolie, 36, reveals that it isn't just the media wondering when (or if) she and longtime partner Pitt will get hitched; the couple's six children are asking the same question because they keep seeing their favorite movie characters take the plunge.
"They have asked, yeah, because ... people get married in the movies," Jolie says in the interview. "Shrek and Fiona are married, you know?"
She and Pitt have given a variety of explanations to the media for their lack of a wedding, from supporting LGBT rights -- they don't want to be able to get married until everyone can -- to saying that they just don't feel like it. But Jolie says she went a different route when explaining her reasoning to her children.
"We've explained to them that our commitment, when we decided to start a family, was the greatest commitment you could possibly have," she says. "Once you have six children, you're committed."
But Brad and Angie's kids might have had a different motivation than the celeb-obsessed public for wondering about the possibility of their parents' nuptials.
Jokes Jolie: "I asked them if it was just because they wanted to have a big cake."
Jolie's Nightline interview airs Monday at 11:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
