Angelina Jolie Responds to Being Called "Ignorant"

The actress defends her directorial debut, after a war victims group criticized its subject matter

Angelina Jolie has never been one to back down from speaking out about what she believes in. So it's no surprise that the Oscar-winning actress and activist had something to say to those who have criticized her already-controversial directorial debut.

Jolie, 35, who is currently promoting her latest movie The Tourist, spoke to reporters in Paris about a war victims group who wrote a letter to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The group suggested Jolie had an "ignorant attitude towards victims" and she should be stripped of her U.S. Goodwill Ambassador title.

Jolie describes her yet-to-be titled film (which she has written and directed) film as "a love story between a Serbian man and a Bosnian Muslim woman on the eve of the 1992-95 war in which 100,000 people died." But rumors that it was about a Bosnian woman who falls in love with her rapist stirred up controvery. Jolie and her crew were barred from Bosnia and are now filming the remaining scenes in Budapest.

Still, Jolie fought back at those rallying against her. "There's one person who has a gripe," she told reporters on Thursday. "The absolute majority of the people, population, the cast, prime minister, president have been extremely supportive."

Brad Pitt's partner (who is reported to be making a cameo in this film) urged people to see the film before judging it. "There are many twists in the plot that address the sensitive nature of the relationship between the main characters," she said.

Jolie also noted that that 95 percent of the film's cast had lived through the war and said much of her inspiration for wanting to make the film was based around how the international community ignored the war and did nothing to stop it.

"I wanted to learn more about it and the people, the more I read and learned I was drawn to that part of the world," she said. "I met artists from that part of the world and found they were extraordinary for what they'd gone through, so I wanted to give them a platform."
