Angelina Jolie isn't the only one in her family who loves it when she taps into her dark side for a role. The Oscar-winning actress says her six children are thrilled that she's playing the Disney villain Maleficent (the evil witch who curses Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty) in an upcoming movie named after the character.
"It's a really great script. I'm having a lot of fun. I've already got my horns fitted," Jolie, 36, tells Entertainment Weekly. "My kids are very happy."
Jolie begins production in June on Maleficent -- the directorial debut of visual effects master Robert Stromberg -- and she says the movie provides a new perspective on the classic fairy-tale villain.
"It's not anti-princess, but it's the first time they're looking at this epic woman [in a different way]," she explains. "I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn't mean she can't have other qualities. You have to figure out the puzzle of what she is."
Although it hasn't been announced who will play Princess Aurora to Jolie's titular Mistress of All Evil, one rumored possibility is teen star Elle Fanning. But regardless of who plays the young princess, the focus of the movie is clearly on the sinister sorceress.
Jolie believes audiences, especially young girls, will find something redeeming in the character.
"It sounds really crazy to say that there will be something that's good for young girls in this, because it sounds like you're saying they should be a villain," Jolie says. "[Maleficent] is actually a great person. But she's not perfect. She's far from perfect."
