Turns out Angelina Jolie isn't just a chapter in Billy Bob Thornton's upcoming memoir -- she's also contributing to it. Jolie, whose three-year marriage to Thornton preceded her relationship with Brad Pitt, will be writing the foreword to Thornton's autobiography, The Billy Bob Tapes: A Cave Full of Ghosts. How did that arrangement happen?
It may not be as crazy as it sounds. In an interview with Vulture last week, Thornton, 56, revealed that he is on "fantastic terms" with Jolie, 36, and claimed that they "talk off and on all the time." At a press conference around the same time, Thornton referred to his ex-wife as "one of my best friends in the world."
"When people split up, people like to make up stories about how they are against each other," Thornton told the press at the Berlin Film Festival. "Well, this was never true, it never has been and never will be, and I'll love her until the end of my life and she'll love me -- as friends."
Thornton added that "Brad is a friend of mine" (hard to picture!) and said that his four children (from other relationships) are friends with the Jolie-Pitt kids.
Could things really be that cozy between the exes, who once wore lockets containing each other's blood and were deemed to have "America's most dangerous marriage" by Rolling Stone? The couple separated after Jolie adopted Maddox from Cambodia, and things were definitely hostile for a while afterwards.
"I thought he was amazing. And, now I just feel like I don't know him," Jolie told ABC News after the split from Thornton. "We're not friends."
Of course, people change. Angelina went on to become a prominent humanitarian and a mother six times over, while Thornton entered into a relationship with makeup effects artist Connie Angland (which has already lasted longer than any of his five marriages). The actors still share the same manager who first introduced them. And now that a decade has passed, maybe they're both ready to look back with fondness at their wilder days. (In fact, Billy Bob's next movie project was reported to be based on his wild life with Angelina, although he has denied it.)
According to the book summary on Amazon, The Billy Bob Tapes contains "colorful tales of his modest (to say the least) Southern upbringing, his bizarre phobias (komoda dragons?), his life, his loves (including his heartbreakingly brief marriage to fellow Oscar winner Angelina Jolie), and, of course, his movie career." Unfortunately, it probably won't contain much dirt on Angelina; image-conscious as she is, we're guessing that she went through the manuscript with a red marker before agreeing to write the foreword!
