The competition is heating up for the award that nobody wants: the Razzie Awards! The Razzies, short for Golden Raspberries, have been honoring the year's worst movies and performances for the past 30 years. Last year, Sandra Bullock had the unprecedented honor of winning both a Razzie Award for Worst Actress (for All About Steve) and an Academy Award for Best Actress (for The Blind Side). So who will follow Sandra into the Razzie hall of shame?
According to the Los Angeles Times, the short list for the 2011 Razzies includes Jessica Alba (Worst Supporting Actress for four different films), Christina Aguilera (Worst Actress for Burlesque), Mickey Rourke (Worst Actor for Iron Man 2 and The Expendables), and even A-lister Angelina Jolie (Worst Actress for The Tourist). Among the likely Worst Picture nominees are Sex and the City 2, The Bounty Hunter and Little Fockers. (And there's a much-needed new category this year: Worst Misuse of 3-D!)
So could anybody pull a Sandra Bullock this year? Actually, Angelina Jolie's performance in The Tourist was nominated for a Golden Globe, so she could potentially take home the best and worst honors for the same performance. Sadly, though, we don't think that Jolie would have the guts (and humility) to show up and accept her Worst Actress award in person -- as Bullock did last year, and Halle Berry before her.
In other awards news, the Writers Guild of America has released its nominees for the year's best screenplays. Among the excellent films nominated for the honor: Black Swan, Inception and the Kids Are All Right for Best Original Screenplay, and The Social Network, True Grit and 127 Hours for Best Adapted Screenplay.
The official Razzie Award nominations will be announced on Monday, January 24th. The Writers Guild Awards will be handed out on February 5th.
