If you were nominated for a major acting award, you might react with tears of joy, a squeal of disbelief, or perhaps a very excited Facebook update. Angelina Jolie, however, is cooler than all of us -- which is why she reacted to her Golden Globe nomination by laughing it off with co-star Johnny Depp.
"We were laughing because it's the first time that I've been in the comedic category, so it's new for me," Jolie explained to the press.
Jolie and Depp were both nominated for The Tourist, their romantic comedy-slash-spy thriller which is currently playing in theaters. Depp will be competing against himself for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, as he is double-nominated for his role as the Mad Hatter in Alice and Wonderland. (He says is "very touched" by the two nominations.) Both actors were no doubt surprised by the honor, especially since The Tourist opened to largely bad reviews and mediocre box office.
One actress who was definitely surprised by her Golden Globe nomination is Emma Stone, star of this year's underrated teen comedy Easy A. Stone told MTV News that her nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy came "completely out of nowhere," especially because she got the call at the crack of dawn.
"I was completely asleep because it was 5:30 in the morning, and my manager called me sounding very upset, which is what you think when someone calls you at 5:30 in the morning," said Stone, 22. "Then I realized it was excitement and he wasn't upset. I realized that nothing was burning down and no one was hurt and everything was wonderful."
As for competing against heavyweights like Jolie, newcomer Stone has a lighthearted attitude.
"Angelina Jolie? She wishes!" the actress joked.
In their Best Actress category, Jolie and Stone will be competing against The Kids Are All Right's Julianne Moore and Annette Bening, as well as Love and Other Drugs's Anne Hathaway. While Stone doesn't seem to think she has a shot at the award, we think she actually might: Jolie and Hathaway's films were panned by critics, and Moore and Bening could cancel each other out by being nominated for the same movie. It may be a longshot, but we'd love to see her acceptance speech!
The Golden Globes will air on January 16th at 8pm on NBC.
