Last month, when Brangelina's 3-year-old daughter, Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, appeared in photos sporting a short haircut, jeans and shirts bought from the boys' department, we couldn't help but notice. While Suri and the rest of the celebutots seem to love flouncy skirts, high heels and just about everything pink and girly, Shiloh seems to be discovering her inner tomboy.
And now, mom Angelina Jolie is talking about it. "Shiloh, we feel, has Montenegro style," Jolie tells the latest issue of Vanity Fair. "It's how people dress there. She likes tracksuits, she likes [regular] suits. She likes to dress like a boy. She wants to be a boy. So we had to cut her hair. She likes to wear boys' everything. She thinks she's one of the brothers."
That may be so, but her clothing choices probably aren't a conscious decision linked to her gender identity, says Logan Levkoff, Ph.D., author of Third Base Ain't What it Used to Be: What Your Kids are Learning About Sex Today. "We do a tremendous disservice to our children when we set them up with such rigid gender roles and forms of expression from an early age," Dr. Levkoff says. "Ideally, our job as parents should be to support our children and never make them feel badly for who they are or who they want to be."
Our take? We're not sure about the whole Montenegro thing (Is this tot really that worldly already?). But in a world where girls are growing up too fast, using makeup and wearing revealing clothing before junior high, it's pretty refreshing to see a kid who's just happy in jeans and a T-shirt. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if Shiloh changed her mind about her look as she gets older. I used to babysit a 9-year-old girl who dressed in jeans, flannel shirts and a bowl haircut. On an outing to the museum, a security guard tried to stop her from running through the entrance. "Come back here, young man!" he called. The next day, she asked me to put her hair in ponytails.
