If Anne Hathaway is beginning to look unhealthy -- thin and with short-cropped hair -- don't worry, she means to appear sickly. The One Day star, who was recently photographed in London sporting her new pixie cut, is in preparation mode for her role in the upcoming adaptation of Les Miserables.
The 29-year-old actress plays Fantine, the tubercular prostitute whose final wish is for Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) to watch over her young daughter. Known for her remarkable singing voice, Hathaway will sing one of the musical's most touching solos -- "I Dreamed a Dream."
To get into character, Hathaway has reportedly been asked to lose up to 16 pounds in three weeks, since in the story, Fantine is dying of consumption and at one point sells her hair in a desperate act to provide for her daughter.
According to the U.K.'s Daily Mirror, Hathaway has been subsisting on a meager 500-calorie diet to shed the pounds, Us Weekly reports. But Hathaway's rep says that while the actress is dropping weight for the role, the English paper has its details wrong.
"The numbers are exaggerated in both pounds and calories," her rep argues.
A souce close to Hathaway confirms that the engaged star has been working out faithfully for the part.
"Anne was exercising two hours a day, five days a week!" the insider explains.
Les Miserables, which started shooting in February, is scheduled for a Dec. 14, 2012 release.
