Anne Hathaway on Her 'Les Mis' Hair: "I Looked Like My Gay Brother"

The actress dishes about shaving her head for Les Miserables and admits that losing weight for the film was "a little nuts"

Anne Hathaway is receiving a lot of Oscar buzz lately for her much-anticipated performance as Fantine in Les Miserables. But her buzz cut has been getting almost as much attention since she worked on the film.

The actress, who turned 30 earlier this month, didn't wear a wig for her depiction of the poverty-stricken prostitute Fantine in director Tom Hooper's movie musical; she actually shaved her hair into a close-cropped style to get into the role. Hathaway not only felt more like Fantine with the new hairdo, but she also explains that she bore a striking resemblance to her older brother, Michael.

"When I eventually looked in the mirror I just thought I looked like my gay brother," the actress told the audience (which gave the film a standing ovation) at an early screening of the film at Lincoln Center in New York City.

Hathaway, who could earn a second Oscar nomination for her portrayal (her first was for 2008's Rachel Getting Married), didn't just shed hair to play Fantine; she also shed 25 pounds off of her already slender figure to perfectly capture the look of an incredibly ill single mother.

"I had to be obsessive about it -- the idea was to look near death," Hathaway explained in the December issue of Vogue, detailing how all she ate was dried oatmeal paste twice a day for two weeks to drop the last 15 pounds as quickly as she did.

"Looking back on the whole experience -- and I don't judge it in any way -- it was definitely a little nuts. It was definitely a break with reality, but I think that’s who Fantine is anyway."

Les Miserables opens in theaters Dec. 25.
