If you feel like you've heard a lot lately about Anne Hathaway's diet, that's because she spends a lot of time thinking about it. The actress, who dropped enough weight to look "near death" in the upcoming Les Miserables, tells Glamour that she still struggles with body image issues.
"I still feel the stress over 'Am I thin enough? Am I too thin? Is my body the right shape?'" she admits. "There’s an obsessive quality to it that I thought I would’ve grown out of by now. It’s an ongoing source of shame for me."
You'd think that making all of those best-dressed lists and scoring sexy roles like Catwoman would boost Hathaway's confidence. But she says she's actually become more self-conscious since joining the A-list.
"I just think about the ridicule you get if you have an off day. If people weren’t watching, I’d be so much more eccentric," she muses. "I know it makes me sound weak, but rather than make myself happy and wear the silly hat and say, 'Oh, I don’t care,' I actually really don’t feel like getting made fun of. So I put on something boring and navy and go out and try to disappear."
The actress is getting good at disappearing: for Les Mis, she lost 25 pounds by eating nothing but oatmeal paste, and for her previous role in Batman Begins, she followed a strict diet and fitness regimen. Hopefully, her next role will allow her to eat a few cupcakes!
At least there's some pay-off: Hathaway has lots of Oscar buzz for both roles. And she tells Glamour that her love life, with new husband Adam Schulman, has never been better.
"He's a good man. He's beyond intelligent. He loves fearlessly," she gushes. "His beliefs are beautiful. He's my best friend. I love him. I just feel that I have the greatest husband in the world for me."
